The Alex and Lena Casper Memorial Lectures on Social Issues and Current Events was endowed by the late Isidor Casper, a prominent Middletown attorney, to honor the memory of his parents. The inaugural lecture was given by US Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas on September 28, 1973.
When he endowed the series, Isidor wrote that “the purpose of these lectures should be to give strength to the American tradition.” He envisioned a dual purpose for the series: to enable students, faculty, and other interested citizens of the area to consider the ideas of informed and articulate speakers, and that the lecturers themselves would gain insight from a visit to a small Ohio city and its community oriented campus.
Writing about the lectures at the time of their inception, Isidor quoted President James Madison: “Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the powers which knowledge gives.”
The Casper Family has remained actively involved in supporting the lecture series as well as the Isidor A. Casper Scholarship at Miami University Middletown.
